The allure of homemade burgers lies not only in the flavor but also in the control you have over the ingredients. Store-bought burgers often come pre-packaged and can lack the freshness that a home-cooked version provides. When you create your own burgers, you can select the highest quality ingredients and tailor the flavors to your liking. Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20)

4 slices Swiss cheese

2 large onions, thinly sliced

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

1 teaspoon sugar

Salt and pepper, to taste

4 hamburger buns

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)

Fresh arugula or spinach (for topping)

Instructions

Caramelize the Onions:

    - In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat.

      - Add the sliced onions and sauté for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

        - When the onions begin to soften, sprinkle in the sugar and a pinch of salt. Continue to cook for another 15-20 minutes, stirring frequently, until the onions are deeply caramelized and golden brown. Remove from heat and set aside.

          Prepare the Burgers:

            - While the onions are caramelizing, divide the ground beef into four equal portions and shape them into patties. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent them from puffing up during cooking. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.

              Cook the Patties:

                - Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat.

                  - Cook the beef patties for about 4-5 minutes on one side, then flip them over.

                    - Add a slice of Swiss cheese on top of each patty and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes, or until the cheese is melted to your liking.

                      Assemble the Burgers:

                        - Lightly toast the hamburger buns on the grill or in a toaster.

                          - Spread a layer of Dijon mustard (if using) on the bottom half of each bun.

                            - Place the Swiss cheese-topped patty on the mustard, followed by a generous scoop of the caramelized onions.

                              - Top with fresh arugula or spinach, and cap with the top half of the bun.

                                Serve:

                                  - Serve the burgers immediately with your choice of sides such as sweet potato fries or a fresh salad. Enjoy your mouthwatering, flavorful Caramelized Onion Swiss Burgers!
