Ingredients

1 loaf of cinnamon raisin bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

6 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1/2 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup raisins (optional)

1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Powdered sugar for serving

Maple syrup for drizzling

Instructions

Prepare the Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray. Set aside.

Layer the Bread: Place half of the cinnamon raisin bread cubes evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. If using, sprinkle half of the raisins and chopped nuts over the bread. Add the remaining bread cubes on top, followed by the rest of the raisins and nuts.

Make the Custard: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined and the sugar is dissolved.

Combine the Mixtures: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the layered bread in the baking dish. Use a spatula or your hands to gently push down the bread cubes, ensuring they are soaking in the custard.

Chill (Optional): For best results, cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the bread to soak up the custard. You can also prepare it the night before and let it soak overnight.

Bake: Remove the baking dish from the refrigerator and uncover. Place it in the preheated oven and bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.

Serve: Allow the bake to cool for a few minutes after removing it from the oven. Dust with powdered sugar, and serve warm with maple syrup drizzled on top.
