Ingredients

1 block (14 oz) firm tofu, pressed and drained

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

1 cup panko breadcrumbs

½ cup cornstarch

½ cup water

3 tablespoons soy sauce

3 tablespoons honey (or maple syrup for vegan option)

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

2 cloves garlic, minced

½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Vegetable oil for frying

Chopped green onions and sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Tofu: Start by gently pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Use a clean towel to wrap the tofu and place a heavy object on top for about 15-20 minutes.

Cut the Tofu: After pressing, cut the tofu into bite-sized nuggets, around 1-2 inches each.

      Set Up Breading Stations:

        - In one bowl, mix the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.

          - In a second bowl, add the cornstarch and water, whisking until smooth.

            - In a third bowl, place the panko breadcrumbs.

              Bread the Tofu Nuggets:

                - Dip each tofu nugget into the flour mixture, coating it evenly.

                  - Next, dip it into the cornstarch-water mixture.

                    - Finally, roll it in the panko breadcrumbs, making sure it’s well-coated. Repeat for all nuggets.

Prepare the Sauce: In a small saucepan, combine soy sauce, honey, apple cider vinegar, minced garlic, and crushed red pepper flakes (if using). Heat on medium, stirring until the honey dissolves completely. Allow it to simmer for about 3-5 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and set aside.

                        Fry the Nuggets:

                          - In a large skillet, heat about 1/4 inch of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. (The oil is ready when a breadcrumb dropped in sizzles.)

                            - Fry the tofu nuggets in batches for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Don’t overcrowd the pan to ensure even cooking.

                              - Use a slotted spoon to transfer the nuggets to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Glaze the Nuggets: In a large bowl, toss the crispy nuggets with the honey garlic sauce until evenly coated.

Serve: Plate the nuggets and garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds. Enjoy your crunchy, sweet, and savory creation!
