Ingredients

1 sheet of frozen puff pastry (thawed)

6 ounces sliced ham (preferably mild or honey ham)

6 ounces shredded cheese (such as Gruyère, Swiss, or cheddar)

1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional, for extra flavor)

1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

1 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Flour for dusting

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare the Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet to smooth out any creases, ensuring it is about 1/8 inch thick. Cut the pastry into rectangles, approximately 4 inches by 6 inches.

Assemble the Filling: Lay a slice of ham on one half of each pastry rectangle. If using, spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on top of the ham. Sprinkle shredded cheese over the ham, ensuring to leave a border around the edges for sealing. If you like, add a sprinkle of garlic powder, thyme, sea salt, and pepper for added flavor.

Fold and Twist: Carefully fold the pastry over the filling to create a triangle or rectangle shape. Seal the edges by pressing down with a fork or your fingers to avoid any filling leaking out during baking.

Cut and Twist: With a sharp knife, make several shallow cuts into the top of each filled pastry (this helps with steam release). Then, take each pastry and twist it gently from both ends to create a spiral effect.

Egg Wash: Place the twists on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each one. Brush the tops generously with the beaten egg using a pastry brush.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed. Keep an eye on them towards the end to prevent over-browning.

Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly on the baking sheet before transferring them to a wire rack. Serve warm as a delightful appetizer or snack.

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 40 minutes | Servings: 6-8 twists
