1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

¾ cup old-fashioned rolled oats

½ cup brown sugar, packed

½ teaspoon baking powder

¼ teaspoon salt

½ cup unsalted butter, melted (plus extra for greasing)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Apple Filling:

3 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and diced

½ cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 tablespoon lemon juice

¼ teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

For the Caramel Drizzle:

1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Sea salt for garnish (optional)

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking pan with butter or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

    Prepare the Crust and Topping: In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir to combine well. Add the melted butter and vanilla extract, mixing until the mixture is crumbly but holds together. Reserve 1 cup of this mixture for the topping.

      Press the Base: Pour the remaining mixture into the prepared baking pan. Using your hands or the back of a measuring cup, firmly press the mixture into an even layer to form the crust.

        Make the Apple Filling: In a separate bowl, combine the diced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and nutmeg (if using). Toss well to coat the apples evenly in the sugary mixture.

          Assemble the Bars: Evenly distribute the apple filling over the crust. Sprinkle the reserved crumble mixture evenly over the apples.

            Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.

              Caramel Drizzle: Remove the bars from the oven and allow them to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Drizzle the caramel sauce generously over the top while still warm. If desired, sprinkle a little sea salt for contrast.

                Cool and Slice: Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan before slicing into squares or rectangles for serving.
